    But it really is hard to believe that they had 12000, are you sure that it was not 1200?

    1. Yep, we're sure. The Satsuma Rebellion was actually that big; Saigo had six battalions initially, each batallion numbering 2000 samurai. And I think Ishikawa may have romanticized the battle a little by showing the samurai charging up against a foe with rifles and gatling guns, when they only had swords. The samurai were actually armed with Enfield muzzle-loading muskets and did have 60 pieces of artillery; they were just hopelessly outclassed by the imperial army's superior numbers (34,000), weapons (breech-loading Snider rifles, which could fire six times as fast as the Enfields), and artillery (over 100).
