Shin Violence Jack Volume 2, part 2 (end)

And let's bring this to a close, to celebrate the new year anew, complete with the cover page right at front (and frankly, I think it's the best one we've seen from any Jack series as of yet).

Questions ill be answered, but the answers only bring more questions. Will Go Nagai continue? Only time will tell, but we hope so. There's a lot of mystery left, and the story seems far from over.

Here it is, volume 2 and the conclusion of Shin Violence Jack!

volume 3's translation is in final checking stages, and then it goes off to our buddy Arles, btw.

I'll also note we've now begun accepting donations. We've purchased raws for scanning such as:

The New Mao Dante
Buichi Terasawa's Karasu Tengu Kabuto and Black Night Bat
 Shin Mazinger Zero
God Mazinger

And Sabu and Ichi's original anime, no less! Please consider donating some to cushion the costs, and I promise you shall not be disappointed with what's coming

And here is an updated part 1 with the covers

  1. Is this even canonical? I know Go Nagai connected a lot of his stories, but is this how the original Violence Jack was?

  3. This is definitely connected to the rest of the Devilman saga...in what respect, I can't say. The canon is extremely...loose

    1. Yeah, that's my question. Was the original Violence Jack connected to Devilman?

    2. Relationship to Devilman
When it was originally published there were several hints that pointed out the relationship between Devilman and Violence Jack. The most important being the physical appearance of Slum King's human pets: Ryo Asuka and Miki Makimura. However, how they came to be like that was unknown, specially since Miki was already dead by the end of Devilman. At the end of the Weekly Manga Goraku serialization, after Slum King was beheaded, he mysteriously re-appears, just as Ryo does (both he and Miki were previously killed by Slum King), this time speaking and recovering his lost limbs. The final chapter reveals that the apocalyptic world in Violence Jack is in a world re-created by God. Satan (Ryo Asuka) is punished by being constantly humiliated by Slum King (Zenon). Jack is actually Akira Fudo, and is one of three parts that form Devilman, the others being a child Jack and woman Jack, both of which were normally seen as birds around Jack from time to time. They merge in order to stop the recently awakened Satan. This time Devilman manages to stop Satan.

Huh? Volume 3 of what? There's a third volume of Shin Violence Jack?

    1. Probably of Violence Jack, not Shin Violence Jack.

  5. Yes, Volume 3 of regular Jack. Shin Jack is only 2 volumes.

And yes, Violence Jack is connected to Devilman. Though the sequel factor of Devilman Lady is significantly more obvious

    1. Yeah, the implication of who Jack makes no sense with Devilman Lady or Devilman. They can't all exist at once. Never cared for Devilman Lady because it's just a gender bend, and you still get a hermaphrodite in the end (Go Nagai-esque :p). lol There's just a lot of holes in Shin Violence Jack's plot, so it's hard to figure any of it out.

  7. Miki lives!

Thank you SO much for scanlating Shin Jack in its entirety. I agree that there is room for more, but whether or not Go Nagai will return to Shin Jack is an open question. Then again, there was an almost 10 year pause in his work on the original VJ, that was only interrupted by a brief period in 1977-78, so long hiatuses in the middle of a series are not uncommon for him.

I wonder, though, considering Ushio's reaction toward a chained Miki and his sense that there was something he should remember that he feared to remember... if he was supposed to be revealed as Tare, Miki's little brother from Devilman? That certainly would have been a twist and given Tare a heroic upgrade.

In any case, it seems that at the moment Devilman Grimoire is Nagai's main project as the first volume has already been gathered together and more chapters are coming. Unless more VJ comes in the future, I'm willing to say that Devilman G is the sequel to Shin Jack. Lord knows, the Devilman-verse has already gone through a few cosmic reboots, so this wouldn't be out of place.

  8. Thank you very much for completing this series! I'm truly grateful for your continuous work in scanlating works from Nagai, Terasawa and many other classic manga authors. Really, thanks for finishing Shin Violence Jack, which, a few years ago, didn't even have compiled volumes and was only available in the now defunct Comic Bunch magazine. I look forward to your scanlations of new Mao Dante and God Mazinger.

  9. DEFINATELY looking forward to more Terasawa!!! Guy's a legend! Such a godly art, such retro sci-fi, so epic villians, so many beauties, etc...

How many volumes are Kabuto and Bat?

Also that Gundragon is a manga with live-action people and some havy computer graphics?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Kabuto is 2. Bat is just the 1

  11. Thanks. Will you please add the missing page and cover as Guro said (page 39, read Violence Jack 2 Par 1).

  12. Already done in the first post. The cover is in this post

  13. Okay just to be sure... That's the cover of Part 2 (and i should insert it in Shin Violence Jack Volume 2 Part 1)?

  14. I has already downloaded Shin Violence Jack volume 2 p2 and I don't see any cover page in it. Can someone help me.

  15. Download the cover page from the post itself

  16. Another series I'd never have thought to see in English finished. Great work!

I also got two more nitpicks, one of which is a mistake I made in the scanning process: Pages 322-323 are actually pages 222-223. And page 344, a dialogue-free page, is missing from this release.

  17. I don't personally believe Violence Jack is canon with Devilman/Devilman Lady. In the ''directors cut'' of the devilman manga there's an extra beginning chapter, chapter 1, called ''The Great War Of The Gods'', which states the beginning of the Devilman story begins in 198x. Find this extra chapter here http://mangafox.me/manga/devilman/v01/c001.1/1.html Now, in Violence Jack the Kanto hellquake hits in 197x, before Devilman has even began! And you have to keep in mind, all humans were already extinct by the end of Devilman, thus Violence Jack is not canon as a direct sequel to Devilman, it's literally illogical.

    1. I think the dates on the 1987 edition of Devilman should be ignored. Nagai used "198X" just to make it contemporary, to state that "this could be happening in the near future".

Also, there is a logical explanation at the end of Violence Jack, which makes null and void all discrepancies between the ending of Devilman and the beginning of VJ. I'm not spoiling it here but you can find it on wikipedia.

Now Devilman Lady is hard to reconcile with Violence Jack, but let's not forget that it is explictly stated in Devilman Lady that Akira Fudo comes from a parallel universe. In Devilman Lady's world, Devilman is just... a comic book. It's like Earth-One and Earth-Two in old DC Comics.

My theory is that Shin Violence Jack might have been Nagai's attempt to rationalize the discrepancies between Devilman Lady and Violence Jack.

Some elements of Violence Jack were also explored in his other manga Susano-Oh Densetsu. And Devilman and Psychogenie appear in Mazin Saga. These two manga are left unfinished as well. Maybe one day, Nagai will have all these threads converge into one huge saga?

    2. From what I read in Devilman Lady, it states that Devilman and Devilman Lady take place in the same universe, it's just that earth got recreated/restarted. Also, in the Devilman manga, at the end of volume 3 the demon war begins, Zenon making himself and the demon existence fully known to humanity world wide, especially to Tokyo, yet Violence Jack shows a mankind existing before the kanto hellquake and after with no knowledge what so ever of demons, as if they never even existed. If anything, Violence Jack may be a parallel universe or simply Go Nagai doesn't care about logic or continuity (probably the right answer to all of the questions).

  18. Wow! So... Slum King was... Jack? Huh? Not sure that makes much sense, but it sure was cool! Does that mean Jack was... Ryo? So confused... :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Skull King you mean, but yes...this is ambiguous as hell, with no true answer

    ReplyDelete
  20. I thought the Skull King was revealed to be Akira Fudo, with Jack strongly implied to be Amon. But with Miki showing up here, does that mean the Miki in the original Violence Jack was a fake or a doppelganger?

  21. I'm really appreciate your work, you're my hero now but could you do me a favor. Would you reupload the shin jack vol 2 p2 with the cover page in it, please? I'm very sorry for disturb you like this but I'm really love Go Nagai's manga and I want to collect them with full page and best quality. I know I'm very annoying but the cover page in your post was resized and you didn't upload the inside cover (page 000b, I guess). So, I'm begging you, could you reupload it please? I always love you guys with all my heart.

  22. Not sure if someone mentioned this yet, but file/page 009.png of Shin Jack Vol 2 Part 1 is actually file/page 344.png of Shin Jack Vol 2 Part 2. Once again, thanks for the scanlation.

  23. Okay guys please fix it up once and for all...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Maybe Gurotaku can help here. 009 seems to be missing from our raw

  25. I deleted my RAWs and replaced them with the translated version so I'm afraid I can't help with the page 009 issue.

  26. Keep up the good work, guys. I have donated a couple of times to your project, I am pretty happy with the Violence Jack scans. For the future, my vote is for God Mazinger.
